1/11/2024 0 Comments Pilgrims chicken strips![]() Unfortunately, that trust is mislaid as their classic, basic "tenders" ranked dead last in this taste test. These are discreetly labeled as tender-shaped, as opposed to chicken strips-which isn't often labeled as tenders but technically allowed to be, per USDA definitions, provided they are solid pieces taken directly from the chicken's breast region before breaded in some way and fried. Or, worse still, they're made from breast and rib meat, but processed in a fashion only slightly better than nuggets-which may also contain dark meat-as the protein is pounded together with binders, extenders, water, or other additives before being shaped in a roughly tender-like form. With that said, the vast majority of what seem to be tenders are actually chicken strips, fingers, or, overseas, goujons, from the more ample chicken breast, which is firmer, larger, and cut down to size. The USDA defines a tender as "any strip of breast meat from the kind of poultry designated" and a tenderloin as "the inner pectoral muscle which lies alongside the sternum (breast bone) of the kind indicated." And on any other animal, the tenderloin-hence its more commonly known name. You see, true chicken tenders are the piece of separable meat found beneath the chicken breast, the pectoralis minor or inner filet. What we learned was that a significant amount of what is marketed or perceived as chicken tenders aren't the fat, oblong chunks of naturally occurring meat we assume them to be. In fact, finding true chicken tenders themselves proved to be the greatest challenge of this tender taste-off. With the dearth of options available in the frozen, breaded chicken aisle, we thought that narrowing our test subjects down to five would be the hardest part. What this task became, though, was as much of an Eat This, Not That! lesson in food manufacturer deception as any. We have a full pipeline of new products that will be introduced throughout the year in response to the valuable insights we are gaining from consumers around the country.But can this be emulated at home? We embarked-with shameless delight-on a mission to find out. “They can see that we are a new company with a new attitude and new lineup of innovative products that consumers want. By spring, all Pilgrim's packaging will sport a fresh, consistent look across the retail meat case, with designs highlighting a new tag line - All About Great Taste – through vibrant product shots and attractive graphics. The next step in Pilgrim’s rebranding campaign is slated for April, when the company will roll out updated packaging for its core line of 13 products, ranging from breast strips and nuggets to wings and popcorn chicken. Among the chef contributors to the expanded recipe section is Food Network celeb Daisy Martinez, and information available on the new site now includes nutritional details, cooking instructions and meal ideas for all dayparts, as well as links for investors, media, job seekers and customers. Additionally, instead of the old site logo featuring the familiar Pilgrim hat, visitors now see a modern depiction of a chicken in red with “Pilgrim’s” written in blue underneath. Pilgrim’s redesigned site came in response to consumer requests for products, coupons and recipes. Last fall, Pilgrim's bowed overhauled consumer packaging on its case-ready meats as part of a national strategy to reposition with consumers and customers alike.
